ABOUT

Bruce Darring and his wife Katie Stiles own and operate 1 of a kind woodworking. Our studio is located in Saranac Lake NY, in the heart of the Adirondack mountains.

I have been in the woodworking trade since 1972, Katie joined me in 1994 and together we have enjoyed our business and the many good people we have met along the way. Being in the Adirondacks has been a very special place to have had a woodworking business. The area has several architecturally fantastic camps that date back to the mid 1800’s. Many of these are within a short boat ride or drive from downtown Saranac Lake where we live and have our studio. Over the years we have been fortunate to have had the pleasure of providing our work to many of these exceptional properties. The area is unique with a colorful history of architecture that continues to grow and provide opportunities for the wood trade. We work with architects, designers, general contractors, property owners but are always extra proud in our own designs.

I have done drafting & design work for over 30years and have produced many one off projects. Several of the these have been published in noteworthy publications available nationally. Recently our work has centered on our one of a kind creations including one off doors and windows with surrounds, boats new and old, lighting fixtures & frames - all beautifully crafted with multiples species of wood. Doors have been a specialty for me since the 1980s. I love making doors and always look forward to a door project in the shop. In fact the shop has been setup with door projects in mind, yet at the same time favorable to any project we are involved with.

Restoring antique pool tables is a hobby and something we enjoy. Working with veneers opens another door for us with the work we do. We have restored several antique Brunswick pool tables over the years and look forward to more of these projects. Currently working on the restoration of a Brunswick Brilliant Novelty - an intensely inlayed table with marquetry produced from the 1880s-1900. Boats have a place in our hearts as well keeping a foot in that door always, with 24ft mahogany underway now.

It is fitting to say that Katie and I feel extremely lucky to be spending our lives doing what we enjoy. It is a special feeling to wake up each day and be able to do what you most enjoy and are passionate about. There may be other woodworkers and craftsman that are more skilled, more productive and in the limelight, but few as fortunate to have lived as we do in this very special place. We know who we are, understand what we have and will continue to do our best going forward with the works produced here.

We would enjoy meeting you and having you enjoy something we have created. Give a call, drop a line, or swing by. New faces are alway welcome.

Bruce Darring
